Bank Security
A Specialist Solution
Bank Security
It’s More Than Robbery
Bank security always seems to have been defined by retail branch robbery, however that is only one element of the overall protection needed to enable a bank to deliver its services.
Banks are highly regulated organisations, their tolerance for risk can be limited and this includes security. It is not only the potentially overt damage that can be caused to a bank, but the reputational damage that can coincide with it, which can present serious risks.
It is a specialist area and Aidan Anderson of RedLeaf Consultancy, who was a bank security manager, understands the issues and brings his experience.

Changing Times
It is not only the fourth industrial revolution that is changing banking, it is the culture of maxamising the customer experience, no matter where that contact might be. This means that there is a high dependency on technology, branch designs are changing, but below that the threats remain, with everyone being cognisant of the prevailing regulatory regime.
Retail Branch Design
The era of retail bank branches segregated by a counter with staff on one side and customers on another is disappearing and being replaced by more open and interactive spaces. However, that doesn’t mean that the threats have reduced, even if to some extent cash has. Branches still have to be planned with a thorough understanding of the threats that are, by engagement with the retail branch risk team and the designers. It is a collaborative process, in which RedLeaf Consultancy can bring its experience to assist.

Policies and Procedures
Understanding a bank’s processes, together with the risks that there are is essential in building policies and procedures. How secure branch cash handling is undertaken or even how intruder alarms are tested, is a specialist area requiring a depth of knowledge in those areas. It has as much to do with understanding what can go wrong, as it is with the implementation of policies and procedures
Security Surveys
Periodically, Security Surveys of the branch network, head office buildings, cheque clearing operations, data centres and cash centres should be undertaken. The objective is to understand if the protective measures and how they are being employed and maintained match a bank’s risk appetite. Understanding how a bank functions, who its key internal and external dependencies are, together with Security’s role in mitigating any risks is key. As a former bank security manager, Aidan Anderson from RedLeaf Consultancy brings his experience for the benefit of clients.
